The symposium seeks to explore the influence and resonance of Conrad’s work across various genres, media, and disciplines. Conrad’s prescient understanding of historical, political, social, and cultural upheavals has resonated through generations of readers and critics. Themes central to his work – global contact, dislocation, homelessness, cultural clashes, lost causes, irreconcilable antagonisms, and the failures of vision and compassion, both personal and political – have become increasingly relevant, often reflecting the very headlines of our time. Critics such as Ch. Achebe, philosophers like P. Lacoue-Labarthe, filmmakers including W. Herzog, playwrights such as V. Valcheva and P. Demirski, musicians like T. O’Regan, and writers such as D. Dabydeen have all engaged with his work.
