SUMMARY:The hidden life of functional dyes
DESCRIPTION:In middle and late 19th century modern organic chemistry was created and developed in order to produce better organic dyes. As a result of tremendous development we continue to use these dyes to color paper, fibers, plastics and paints. The fundamental difference between these classical dyes and functional dyes is that the latter ones although possess a color are prepared and studied for different reason. This different reason is related indirectly to absorption of light but the phenomenon of interest is different e.g. emission of light, sensitization of oxygen, electroluminescence, charge mobility etc. Indeed, neutral organic dyes possessing a π-conjugated structure are drawing considerable attention as potential building blocks for the preparation of highly efficient semiconducting materials for various organic electronic applications.\nIndigo is one of the oldest dyes from the perspective of human being. Indigo and its derivatives constitute a family of natural-origin dyes and pigments of substantial industrial importance. An exemplary indigoid possessing a rich history is 6,6’-dibromoindogo known as Tyrian purple dye, which recently demonstrated ambipolar behavior in organic field effect transistors.\nThe lecture will describe applications of functional dyes in our life. In particular it will be focused organic light-emitting diodes, photodynamic therapy and fluorescence imaging.\nThe Polish Academy of Sciences Scientific Centre in Paris invites you to the lecture Hidden life of functional dyes, given by Prof. Daniel Gryko, Director of the Institute of Organic Chemistry, Polish Academy of Science. Professor Gryko is a leading expert in the field of functional dyes. His research interests include phenomena such as two-photon absorption, radical emission, and proton transfer in the excited state. He is also the discoverer of many new chromophores and heterocyclic nanographenes. He has received numerous awards, including the Foundation for Polish Science Award (2017) and the Polish-French Science Award Maria Skłodowska-Curie and Pierre Curie from the French Academy of Sciences (2024). He has also received an ERC Advanced Grant.\nThe patron of the lecture The hidden life of functional dyes is the Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences.\nThe event is organized as part of the “Meetings with Science” project, a series of popular science lectures organized by the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Polish Academy of Sciences Scientific Centre in Paris since 2024.
