On Wednesday, December 4th, a popular science event titled “The Dark Side of the Universe” took place at the Polish Academy of Sciences Scientific Centre in Paris. The lecture was delivered by Prof. Marek Rogatko from Maria Curie-Skłodowska University and marked the final installment of the 2024 “Meetings with the world of science” series.
During his presentation, Professor Rogatko discussed:
- the origins of the universe, including reflections on the universe as a potential vacuum fluctuation;
- black holes, highlighting their role, simplicity, and perfection on a macroscopic scale;
- dark matter structures, such as dark matter rings and 3D reconstructions of cosmic formations;
- cosmological models, focusing on superstrings, their dimensions, and their significance in gravity theory;
and much more.
Professor Rogatko also addressed questions about the existence of life in the universe, referencing hypothetical ancient civilizations, such as Göbekli Tepe, but in a cosmic context.
The lecture featured numerous illustrations of cosmic phenomena, observational data, mathematical models, and philosophical inquiries about humanity’s place in the universe.
“Meetings with the world of science” is a series of lectures on popular science organised by the Polish Academy of Sciences Scientific Center in Paris. It aims to disseminate the achievements of Polish scientists in France. The meetings are held in a hybrid form and are aimed at all those interested, regardless of their level of knowledge in particular topics.
