Maria Skłodowska-Curie en Italie. Trois voyages, une passion [VERNISSAGE]

The exhibition dedicated to Marie Skłodowska-Curie presents lesser‑known episodes from the life of one of the most outstanding scientists in history, focusing on her three journeys to Italy: in 1911, 1918, and 1931.

The exhibition – which includes, among other elements, information about Marie Skłodowska-CuriE’s first foreign lecture in Genoa, her scientific mission in 1918, as well as her participation in the Roman congress on nuclear physics at the dawn of the atomic era – consists of panels depicting the scientist’s biography, her groundbreaking discoveries, and a map of her scientific travels around the world. Its narrative presents Marie Skłodowska-Curie as a researcher, traveler, and active member of the international academic community. It highlights the values she considered essential for the advancement of science: research mobility and cross-border collaboration.

The exhibition also recalls Marie Skłodowska-Curie’s impact on the development of physics, chemistry, and medicine, as well as her significant role in breaking barriers faced by women in science. It is an invitation to rediscover the scientist anew.

During the opening event, the film Marie Skłodowska-Curie in Italy in search of radium will be screened. It was produced by the Polish Academy of Sciences Scientific Centre in Rome, the Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Department of Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry of the University of Pisa, and Museum of Maria Skłodowska-Curie in Warsaw.

The project is a continuation of the exhibition prepared in 2025 by the Polish Academy of Sciences Scientific Centre in Rome. Thanks to extensive archival research, it was possible to reconstruct the details of her journeys and uncover previously unpublished materials.

The exhibition will be presented at the Polish Academy of Sciences Scientific Centre in Paris (74 rue Lauriston, 75116 Paris) from 10 April to 29 May 2026. All visitors are welcome between 9:45-13:00 and 14:00-16:30. Admission is free.

The event will be held in English.
