On 4 March, at a meeting organised as part of the Café scientifique initiative, we had the honour of welcoming Dr Michalina Kowala, assistant professor at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań.

Dr Kowala gave a presentation entitled ‘Challenges for the press sector in the face of the development of artificial intelligence – a legal perspective’, in which she introduced the audience to issues related to the implementation of publishers’ rights, discussing primarily the French and Polish perspectives, but also the international one. She raised issues related to imprecise nomenclature in legal regulations; disputes between publishers and information platforms (especially Google); and the use of artificial intelligence in the use of press resources and the freedom of users to receive information.

The presentation sparked a lively discussion, particularly with regard to the role that artificial intelligence plays today.

We would like to thank Dr. Kowala for her extremely interesting presentation!

Café scientifique is a series of meetings with students, doctoral students and researchers who are visiting the Polish Academy of Sciences Scientific Center in Paris to pursue their studies, internships and research stays. Each meeting is an opportunity to present their scientific interests in an intimate setting and discuss the topics raised. During some meetings, we also host scientists from outside our Center, integrating the Polish scientific community in France.
