Sculpture as an expression of emotion – art full of rebellion and passion. Bolesław Biegas and his spiritual revolution
The Polish Academy of Sciences Scientific Centre in Paris invites you to an open lecture by Anna Aurelia Bieniek from the Institut Bibliothèque polonaise de Paris, who will introduce the figure and work of Bolesław Biegas – one of the most original and controversial Polish sculptors of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The artist, who fled Poland to escape academic conventions, found a space for his symbolic and emotional art in Paris. Biegas’ sculptures do not depict reality – they are an expression of internal conflicts, spiritual quests and personal rebellion against tradition. The lecture will be a kind of introspection of selected works, a look at their form, a search for the artist’s message. It will be an opportunity to reflect on how these works were received in his time and how they are interpreted today. The lecture will also include references to his relationship with Parisian critics – especially Guillaume Apollinaire and Adolphe Basler – who recognised the power, originality and spiritual intensity of his work.
Lecture in French.
